Pet owners benefit from their dogs' daily activity. Dog owners walk 22 minutes more per day, according to a 2017 BMC Public Health study.
This counts toward the American Heart Association's 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week.
Dr. Conrad advises daily walks for most pets. Yet, "the length of your walk very much depends on breed, age, and overall physical health."
"Similar to how we wouldn't engage in a marathon without prior training, it is unrealistic to anticipate that your dog can immediately handle long distances," states Dr. Karwacki.
This particularly applies to breeds such as French bulldogs, pugs, or Boston terriers that are not tolerant to high temperatures.
Respect "Dogs may slow down, look in your direction, or outright refuse to move if they are feeling tired or don't want to walk," explains Dr. Conrad.
